Mr. Mike Van Niekerk

Orthopaedic Surgeon

 

Mike was born in South Africa graduating from Stellenbosch medical school Cape Town, in 2000. He then worked in England where he met his Kiwi wife before moving to New Zealand where he completed his Orthopaedic training, spending two of his specialist training years at Whangarei Base Hospital. This ultimately inspired him to return north and be part of a very dynamic and experienced orthopaedic practice at Northland Orthopaedics and Whangarei Base Hospital.

 

Mike completed fellowships at:

  • St Georges Hospital and Epsom Elective Orthopaedic Centre, London
  • Groote Schuur Hospital, Cape Town
  • Rosebank Sports Clinic, Johannesburg

 

His main sub-specialty interests involve Arthroscopic and Arthroplasty surgery of the shoulder, hip and knee, as well as pelvic and acetabular trauma. He performs minimally invasive direct anterior hip replacement for suitable patients, and uses computer navigation to perform knee replacement surgery. He is involved in research focusing on young adult hip pain due to femoro-acetabular impingement and labral tears.

 

Mike has a public appointment at Whangarei Base Hospital where he is involved in the training of medical students and orthopaedic registrars. He is a member of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons, the New Zealand Orthopaedic Association, and the International Society of Hip Arthroscopy. His other interests revolve around his wife and 3 young children enjoying fishing, diving, surf ski racing and sailing.
